WIPO Reports a Second Straight Year of Growth in Global Patent Filings

The World Intellectual Property Organization said that international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty rose again in 2025, reaching 275,900 applications, up 0.7% from the previous year. The update points to continued global demand for patent protection, especially in technology-driven sectors, and suggests that cross-border innovation activity remained resilient despite a cautious economic environment.

According to WIPO, the increase marks the second consecutive year of growth in PCT filings, reinforcing the role of the international patent system as a key route for protecting inventions across major markets. The report also frames the trend as an important signal for policymakers and companies monitoring where technological competition is intensifying.

The organization’s latest figures are especially relevant for technology inventors and multinational applicants, since PCT filings are commonly used to secure patent rights in multiple jurisdictions at once. WIPO’s outlook implies that global patent activity may continue expanding if investment in advanced technologies stays strong.
