China Completes First Nationwide Audit of University and Research-Institute Patents

China has completed its first-ever inventory of patents held by universities and research institutes, covering more than 1.3 million patents, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The move signals a major effort to assess the quality and commercialization potential of a vast technology patent base.[1]

The inventory is significant because it targets technology-related inventions at scale and could shape how China manages research output, licensing, and industrial transfer going forward. As a national-level patent policy step affecting one of the world’s largest innovation systems, it also has broader implications for the global technology and intellectual property landscape.[1]
