Russia Expands Patent Compensation Rules for Invention Disputes

Russia’s 2026 intellectual property reforms raised patent-related compensation thresholds and made damages more predictable for infringement cases involving inventions and other protected technologies.[3]

Under the new rules effective from 4 January 2026, the maximum fixed compensation increases from 5 million rubles to 10 million rubles, while the minimum compensation for patents rises from 10,000 rubles to 50,000 rubles.[3]

The reform also gives courts more flexibility to adjust the method of calculating compensation, and it changes how damages are assessed when a single counterfeit product uses several intellectual property rights at once.[3]

Analysts cited in the source describe the move as part of a broader effort to make enforcement more predictable while increasing the financial cost of patent infringement.[3]
