Mexico Modernises Patent Rules to Speed Up Technology Protection

Mexico has updated its industrial property framework to modernise patent procedures, a move aimed at making protection for technological inventions faster and more predictable for innovators and businesses operating in major markets. The reform is part of a broader effort to align the country’s patent system with current innovation needs and international practice.[1]

According to the European Commission’s Intellectual Property Helpdesk, the changes were introduced through a decree published on 3 April 2026 and form part of a significant revision of Mexico’s Federal Law for the Protection of Industrial Property.[1]

  • The reform is focused on industrial property, including patents for technological inventions.[1]
  • It is designed to modernise the patent system rather than change only a narrow procedural rule.[1]
  • The move reflects wider international pressure to make patent frameworks more efficient for innovation-driven sectors.[1][3]

For inventors and companies, the practical significance is clearer patent pathways for technologies that need legal protection across large and internationally connected markets. In a year when global PCT patent filing activity continued to rise, reforms like Mexico’s may support stronger cross-border innovation strategies.[3]
