China’s University Patent Audit Targets Commercialization of 1.3 Million Inventions

China’s top intellectual property authority said it has completed its first-ever audit of the patent holdings of universities and research institutes, covering more than 1.3 million patents and signaling a broader push to improve how academic inventions are managed and commercialized.[1]

The review is significant for the global technology sector because China is one of the world’s largest patent markets, and changes in how university and institute patents are assessed can affect technology transfer, licensing, and the pace at which research reaches industry.[1]

Authorities framed the move as part of a system-level effort to strengthen the quality and use of invention patents, which may influence future policy on innovation ownership, patent portfolio cleanup, and commercialization incentives across large-scale research institutions.[1]
