Europe Moves to Strengthen Tech Patents and Reduce Foreign Dependence

The European Commission unveiled a broad technology-sovereignty package aimed at boosting domestic innovation and cutting reliance on U.S. and Chinese firms, with a strong focus on cloud infrastructure, AI services, open-source software, and semiconductors.[4]

The proposal also signals a more protectionist public-procurement approach in sensitive sectors such as defense and healthcare, where access for non-European companies could be restricted.[4]

For patent strategy, the initiative matters because it is likely to increase pressure on European companies and research centers to commercialize more inventions locally and to secure stronger intellectual-property positions in areas linked to chips, AI, and advanced digital infrastructure.[4]

Analysts say the package reflects a wider global competition over technological leadership, with Europe trying to narrow the gap with the United States and China while protecting critical innovation ecosystems.[4]
