WIPO Reports Surge in Global Patent Filings for 2025
International patent applications via WIPO’s PCT rose 0.7% in 2025 to 275,900 filings, driven by digital communication (11.1% of applications) and semiconductors showing the fastest growth, fueled by AI investments.
China led with 73,718 filings (up 5.3%), followed by the US (52,617, down 3%), Japan, South Korea, and Germany. Huawei topped applicants with 7,523 filings, ahead of Samsung and Qualcomm.
Top growers included Huawei (+923 applications), LG Energy Solution (+506), India’s Jio Platforms (+971), Nokia (+470), and NTT Docomo (+459). 16 of top 20 applicants are in ICT.
