Russia Extends the Patent Filing Window After Public Disclosure

Russia approved a legal change that doubles the period for filing a patent application after an invention has been disclosed, extending the deadline from 6 months to 12 months. The rule also applies to disclosures made at international exhibitions, making it a notable development for technology inventors operating in a major global market.

The amendment was adopted by the State Duma on July 8 and is being introduced into the Russian Civil Code. It gives inventors more time to secure patent protection after presenting technical solutions publicly, which may reduce the risk of losing rights after early disclosure.

Analysts expect the move to be especially relevant for startups, research teams, and companies that showcase prototypes at international venues, since it broadens the practical runway between public unveiling and patent filing.
