Russia Extends the Patent Grace Period to Protect Exhibition-Driven Innovation

Russia’s State Duma approved a bill on July 8, 2026, that doubles the patent filing grace period from 6 months to 12 months after an invention is disclosed, including at international exhibitions. The change is intended to give inventors more time to secure patent protection after public disclosure and is part of amendments to the Russian Civil Code.[2]

The measure is especially relevant for technology inventors and companies that showcase new devices, software-enabled systems, and industrial solutions at major global fairs, where early disclosure can otherwise complicate patent rights.[2]
