WIPO-Backed Patent Rule Change Gives Mexico a Faster Path for Invention Applications

The World Intellectual Property Organization approved the designation of Mexico’s IMPI as both an International Searching Authority and an International Preliminary Examining Authority, strengthening Mexico’s role in the international patent system.[2]

The move is significant for technology inventors and applicants because it expands the country’s capacity to handle patent-related international work and supports faster, more coordinated patent examination for invention applications.[2]

At the same time, a new amendment in Mexico’s intellectual property framework sets a maximum of one year from the start of substantive examination for the final decision on patent, utility model, and design applications, a reform that could shorten uncertainty for technology filings.[2]
